2010-11 Photo Contest
In an ongoing celebration of Virginia Main Streets 25th year, VMS is holding a photo contest for designated communities.

The Contest: Each quarterly contest will feature two content categories. Amateur and professional photographers may participate.
Categories Due by Close of business:
* Images of Summer and Celebrating Diversity Thursday, September 30, 2010
* Images of Fall and Nourishing Community Tuesday, November 30, 2010
* Images of Winter and The business of Main Street Monday, February 28, 2011
* Images of Spring and Main Street Faces Wednesday, May 31, 2011

Submissions: All photographs must be submitted with completed consent and release forms (forms available at the Culpeper Renaissance Inc. office)

Image Requirements: All images must be submitted as a high quality, high resolution JPG (2,400 x 3,400 pixels or 1.5 and 2MB).

Release Requirements: Subjects and photographers must give both Culpeper Renaissance Inc. and Virginia Main Street consent to use the photographs in promotional activities as they see fit, with attribution where possible.

CRI Announces 3rd Thursday Summer Concert Series   -  April 28, 2010
The annual 3rd Thursday Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Culpeper Renaissance, Inc., a downtown development organization, is quickly approaching. Join us in historic downtown Culpeper, directly in front of the Depot on Commerce Street, May 20, June 17, July 15, and August 19 from 5-9 p.m. for some great summer fun!

The Embers, one of the greatest bands to ever come out of the Carolinas, will kick off the series on May 20. For decades, The Embers have been making music by playing a mix of rhythm and blues & heart and soul. To say "The Embers play Beach Music" is an understatement. After 17 albums, numerous single releases, The Embers are one of the most popular bands, as well as one of the most active groups, in the country. They've been inducted into the South Carolina Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame and were named North Carolina's Official Musical Ambassadors. The Embers have opened for the Rolling Stones, made commercials for Budweiser, and have also performed at the Olympics and during former President Clinton's inauguration.

The festivities continue on June 17 with Casper who promise to transform downtown Culpeper into a party with their high-energy music that covers a little bit of everything: swing, Motown, rock-n-roll, funk, and ballads. A 30-plus year success story in Virginia and up and down the East Coast, Casper is all about the Fun! This is one concert you will not want to miss!

On July 15, The Rhondels, a musical institution and one of the best variety groups around take the stage. The Rhondels have been entertaining audiences of all sizes and age groups around the country for decades. Performing as The Rhondels since 1983, formerly Bill Deal & The Rhondels from the late 70's, they continue to be a symbol of unequaled excellence in the music industry. The quality of the performers within the group has kept The Rhondels as favorites of live music fans everywhere. With the production of their latest album, "Islands of Paradise", The Rhondels continue to move forward with the times.

Join us for our final concert on August 19 with The Worx, voted best local band for 2007 in Harrisonburg, Va., and for 2008 in Lynchburg, Va. The Worx, a unique combination of five talented and versatile musicians, consistently please a wide range of audiences with their enormous musical repertoire. The Worx perform modern and classic rock-n-roll covers as well as original material with such energetic enthusiasm that everyone will be on their feet for this final exciting show of the concert series.

Advance tickets for each of the concerts are available for $5, and back by popular demand, 3rd Thursday Summer Concert Series Season Passes are available for only $15 (thats one concert for free)! Advance tickets may be purchased up until the day before the event at the following locations: all StellarOne offices throughout Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Locust Grove, Randys Flowers located at 211 West Evans Street, Pepperberries located at 102 North Main Street, The Museum of Culpeper History at 803 South Main Street, and the Culpeper Renaissance office located at 127 West Davis Street. Individual concert admission is $7 at the gate on the day of the event for those 21 and over. Admission for those under 21 is always FREE!

All concerts begin at 5:00 pm and end at 9:00 pm. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, and a variety of FREE childrens activities will also be offered. So bring friends, family & a lawn chair! All are welcome! Please remember no pets and no coolers, but picnic baskets are welcome! Coming to Culpeper on May 20 is one of the greatest Beach Music bands to come out of the Carolinas. THE EMBERS will be performing at the Depot in Downtown Culpeper for the 3rd Thursday Summer Concert Series sponsored by Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. For decades, The Embers have been making music by playing a mix of rhythm and blues and heart and soul. To say "The Embers play Beach Music" is an understatement. After seventeen albums, numerous single releases, The Embers are one of the most popular bands as well as one of the most active groups in the country. The Embers boast an average of three-hundred dates per year, ranging from Toronto to Florida and westward to California and Hawaii.
A musical marvel, The Embers have survived disco, punk, new wave, and hip-hop and continue to take the stage as one of the most entertaining bands to ever perform. They've been inducted into the South Carolina Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame and were named North Carolina's Official Musical Ambassadors. They've opened for the Rolling Stones, done commercials for Budweiser, played the Olympics and President Clinton's inauguration, and created the soundtrack for endless summers. The Embers latest CD, "Beach Music, Super Collaboration", a collaboration album of internationally known recording artists, and upcoming future stars. Their hits include "I love Beach music" and "Far Away Places," among many others.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the concerts. Admission is $7 at the gate for those 21 and over with concerts beginning at 5:00 pm and ending at 9:00 pm. The Hungry Caterpillar is coming to the Culpeper D  -  April 14, 2010
Excitingly, the Hungry Caterpillar is coming to the Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market the first four Saturdays in May! The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter from Eastern View High School will be sponsoring this weekly children's event. The theme each week will center around Eric Carle's popular children's story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and healthy nutrition for children based on the principles of the food guide pyramid.

The topics and activities will be as follows:
"May 1, 2010 Read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Color your plate beautiful with fruits and vegetables
"May 8, 2010 Milk Mustache, have your picture taken with a milk mustache

Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market 2010  -  March 14, 2010
The Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market sponsored by Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. will soon open for the 2010 season every Saturday May - October from 7:30 a.m. until noon at the East Davis Street and Commerce Street parking lot in historic downtown Culpeper. Be certain to stop by the market to pick up locally grown produce while supporting regional farmers. Tom Hennaman will return for a fourth season as the market manager. Tom has created an exciting atmosphere with local musicians playing in the background while familiar faces peruse the market in search of fresh produce, cheeses and meats. Local artists display handmade arts and crafts for all to enjoy. The market has grown to more than 40 participants for this seasons market. There is no doubt that the Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market has become a destination on Saturday mornings creating quite an attraction for the downtown district.
