Culpeper to Receive Great Streets Award Sunday at   -  October 6, 2011
During the annual Taste of Culpeper celebration Sunday, town of Culpeper officials will receive the Great Streets Award announced this week by the American Planning Association, which named Culpepers Davis Street as one 10 Great Streets in 2011.

Mayor Chip Coleman will offer remarks regarding the prestigious award between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Depot. APA Director of Outreach and International Programs Jeff Soule will present the award.

It is ironic that part of the Great Streets award criteria and a catalyst for the success of Davis Street is The Depot where Soule will be arriving by Amtrak train to present a plaque to Mayor Chip Coleman.

Officials will also participate in a ribbon cutting to commemorate being named a Great Street.

Being recognized for having a great street is coupled with the towns recognition many years ago as one of Americas Best Small Towns.

The APA singled out Davis Street for the honor for its grass roots revitalization effort.

The Taste of Culpeper celebration runs from noon to 5 p.m.

CRI and Town Receive VMS Awards  -  April 8, 2011
Culpeper receives Virginia Main Street Milestone Award
- Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. and the Town of Culpeper receive awards for Volunteer Investment, Building Renovations, and special recognition for the Be a Culpeper Local campaign -

Richmond, VA On Thursday, March 31, Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. (CRI) and the Town of Culpeper were presented with a Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Award for rehabilitating more than 250 buildings since being designated as a Main Street Community in 1988. Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. received an award for 25,000 volunteer hours invested in the district since 1997, and special recognition for the Be a Culpeper Local campaign.
At a ceremony focused on the results of Main Street efforts, Virginia Deputy Secretary of Commerce and Trade for Rural Development Mary Rae Carter spoke to the audience of 95 downtown revitalization volunteers and professionals about the visible results of their leadership. You are creating places where people want to be, she said. And youve often been at the forefront of community and economic development, from your early promotion of farmers markets to advocating for walkable and liveable downtowns.

Culpepers historic commercial district fits that description, and CRI continues to lead in innovative strategies to strengthen the position of the district economically and in the hearts of residents. The Be a Culpeper Local campaign was recognized as an example of a well crafted and implemented strategy encouraging residents to shop locally to support the community. (For more information on the campaign visit: www.beaculpeperlocal.com.)

At the ceremony, Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development Director Bill Shelton pointed to downtown progress through the numbers. In the last five years, Designated Main Street Communities have sparked more than $275 million in private investment in their districts, said Shelton. As a result, last year there was a net collective gain of 663 jobs across the 21 Main Street downtown districts.
Preservationist Jean Carroon, FAIA, LEED AP, author of the book, Sustainable Preservation: Greening Existing Buildings emphasized the impacts of the groups work in the sustainability of their communities. People often forget that before we recycle, we can reduce consumption and reuse existing products, said Carroon. A building is the one of the largest handmade objects we have. Reusing a building has an environmental impact far greater than recycling an aluminum can.

In addition to Culpeper, Virginia Main Street recognized the following communities for excellence.

" Bedford
" Berryville
" Franklin
" Harrisonburg
" Luray
" Manassas
" Martinsville
" Radford
" Rocky Mount
" South Boston
" Staunton
" Warrenton
" Waynesboro
" Winchester

Currently there are 21 designated Virginia Main Street communities: Abingdon, Altavista, Bedford, Blackstone, Berryville, Culpeper, Franklin, Harrisonburg, Luray, Lynchburg, Manassas, Marion, Martinsville, Orange, Radford, Rocky Mount, South Boston, Staunton, Warrenton, Waynesboro, and Winchester.

The Virginia Main Street program, managed by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, provides assistance and training to help communities increase the economic vitality of their downtown commercial districts. Virginia Main Street uses the National Main Street model to help communities revitalize their downtowns by focusing on their unique heritage and attributes. The program helps communities implement a comprehensive revitalization strategy that creates economic growth and pride in downtowns.

Culpeper receives Virginia Main Street Award  -  April 2, 2010
Culpeper receives Virginia Main Street Milestone Award
- Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. and the Town of Culpeper receive award for private investment at Lynchburg ceremony -

Lynchburg, VA - On Thursday, March 25, Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. and the Town of Culpeper were presented with a Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Award for $40 million in private investment toward downtown revitalization since being designated as a Virginia Main Street community in 1988.
The award was presented at the Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Awards ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the program at a special dinner held at Lynchburg's Craddock Terry Hotel.
Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development Director William C. Shelton addressed the Main Street volunteers, local leaders, businesses, local governments and private investors in attendance. "The work being done in Main Street communities requires a collaborative effort across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors," said Shelton to the group of more than 100 gathered. "Bringing them together in a shared vision of a vibrant downtown requires leadership. Over the past 25 years that leadership fostered a new climate in Virginia downtowns, helping to create more than 14,000 jobs."
Keynote speaker Chuck D'Aprix, founder of the D.C.-based organization, The Downtown Entrepreneurship Project. D'Aprix charged the group to make downtowns the center of opportunity by providing support and resources to potential and emerging business owners. "We should continue working to attract entrepreneurs, not just businesses," Dupree said.

"One of the focal points of the Main Street program is to create a business climate that encourages investment in the downtown district. Receiving an award for surpassing the 40 million dollar investment milestone is an unparalleled achievement for a town of this size. The revitalization efforts of the Culpeper Main Street program could not have been this successful without the participation and support of the Town and the community at large, and Culpeper Renaissance is grateful to be sharing in this acknowledgment of our community's strength." - Michael Lysczek, President of Culpeper Renaissance Inc.
